Sign the Thank You Card to the New York City Council for Launching Critical Funding for Abortion Access
September 13, 2022

Today the New York City Council announced that it has allocated $1 million to increase access to abortion care and provide financial support to people accessing abortion care within the five boroughs of New York. The Brigid Alliance is proud to be a recipient of this funding, alongside our partners at the New York Abortion Access Fund.

The initiative is the largest municipal investment to support abortion access in the country. It will provide support for the cost of abortions for people with lower incomes – and support the transportation, housing, meals, child care, and other logistics for people forced to travel to New York for abortion care.  Please join us in saying “thank you” to the New York City Council by signing our “Thank You” card below.

Text of “Thank You” Card

To the New York City Council:

Thank you for your launch of the game-changing initiative to provide financial support to people accessing abortion care in New York City. This fund critically acknowledges that abortion access, for people with lower incomes, relies not just on financial support for the cost of the procedures – but on the transportation, housing, meals, childcare and other logistics faced by people who are forced to travel to New York for abortion care. Full funds and support like this make abortion access possible.

As a supporter of The Brigid Alliance, I’m grateful to see people from all across the country, including you and your colleagues, invest in organizations that support people forced to travel long distances for care.

It’s heart-breaking that, in the face of new state-level abortion restrictions and outright bans, more people than ever before are traveling long distances to reach an abortion provider. Organizations like the Brigid Alliance and the New York Abortion Access Fund are working as hard as possible to fill critical gaps to make abortion possible for all Americans – but the truth is that frontline organizations like these are stretched thin and facing surging demand.

New York City’s commitment to increasing abortion access is a vital recognition of this reality. I applaud the City Council for that support and encourage NYC leaders to engage with elected officials across the country to launch similar initiatives so that we can join together in solidarity to keep abortion borderless, burden-free, and accessible to all.
